Christening Gown Size Guide: What Size to Buy by Age & Weight

Choosing the right size christening gown is one of the most important decisions you'll make when preparing for your baby's special day. Order too small and you'll be scrambling for a last-minute replacement; order too large and the gown won't photograph beautifully. This guide takes the guesswork out of christening gown sizing so you can order with confidence.

Why Christening Gown Sizing Is Different to Regular Baby Clothing

Christening gowns are designed to be worn for a ceremony - not for everyday movement and play. This means they're often cut with a more generous, flowing silhouette. Many styles are also designed to be worn over a nappy and singlet, so it's important to account for that extra layer when choosing your size.

Unlike standard baby clothing, christening gowns are typically sized by age range rather than weight alone. We recommend using both age and measurements as a guide and always sizing up if your baby is between sizes.

Christening Gown Size Chart by Age & Weight

Use the table below as a general guide. Every baby is different, so if your little one is on the larger or smaller side for their age, refer to the weight column first.

Size Age (Approx) Chest (cm) Length (cm)
00  0-3 months 48cm 38cm
0 3-6 months 50cm 40cm
1 6–12 months 52cm 42cm

When Is the Christening? Timing Your Order

Most christenings take place between 1 and 6 months of age, though many families choose to wait until 3–6 months when babies are more settled and alert for photos. Here's how to think about sizing based on your ceremony date:

Ordering before birth:
Choose a 0-3 month or 3-6 month size. Newborn sizes are beautiful, but babies grow quickly - a slightly larger gown will still look stunning and give you more flexibility.

Ordering 4–6 weeks before the ceremony:
Measure your baby's current weight and height, then size up by one size to account for growth.

Ordering close to the ceremony date:
Use your baby's current measurements and refer to the chart above.

Tips for Getting the Perfect Fit

Check the chest and length measurements
Please refer to our simple size guide listed above or refer to the link at the bottom of this page for an additional visual size guide.

Account for the nappy.
Your baby will be wearing a nappy under the gown, so ensure there's enough room around the waist and hips.

Consider the season.
If your ceremony is in winter, your baby may be wearing a singlet or bodysuit underneath - factor this in when sizing.

Always size up if in doubt.
A gown that's slightly generous will still look elegant; one that's too snug will be uncomfortable and may not fasten correctly.
